How to layer bedding like a designer
Whether you’re entertaining guests or preparing your home for potential buyers, your bedroom can be the hardest place to find the right fit. When it comes to your bedroom, most wandering eyes will fall on your bed. While you can’t go wrong with a neat bed, if you’re looking for a simple and quick way to enhance your bedroom decor, here’s how to layer your bedding like a designer.
Your Foundation
The first thing you need for your bedding is a fitted sheet, but not all fitted sheets are created equal. You’ll want a sheet with deep pockets that can be tucked properly under the bed. There is nothing more frustrating than turning over in your sleep only to have the sheet pop out of the corner.
Next, you need to add a top-level worksheet. This will poke out over the bedspread. Be sure to tuck them in nicely with the sheet. If you’re looking for crisp lines, don’t bother ironing the whole thing! Instead, pop a towel under the section that will show and iron that small section. It makes a big difference.
Quilts and bedspreads
Next, you must decide on a comforter or bedspread. Whichever you choose, make sure it doesn’t clash with the decorative blankets and pillows. A neutral color like white or earth tones is usually a good base.
Just remember to keep in mind the weight of the blanket and the temperature of your home. Also, make sure the blanket is large enough to cover the sides of the bed. This will give it a nice crisp fold and allow you to tuck it behind the side rails or under the mattress for a seamless look.
Shams and decorative pillows
Most people make the mistake of using a fake pillow as their decorative pillow. A fake pillow should be comfortable and be the primary pillow you or your guests sleep on. In general, it should be the same neutral color as your comforter or bedspread. Think of it as a canvas for your decorative pillows to place in front of.
Now, here’s where the fun really begins. Choosing a decorative pillow can be the most enjoyable, but it can also be the most difficult. That’s because there are many decorative pillows to choose from. Your safest bet is to use the general color palette of the room. However, if you have the courage, you can do the exact opposite and choose something that will pop and catch the eye.
Down comforter or Du-von’
You should fold your comforter or duvet to the foot of the bed. In general, if your decorative pillows and duvet/quilt are not part of the set, they should at least be in the same color palette.
Finally, whether factory-made or handmade, your blanket is your resistance; you can crumple it, fold it into a triangle, or drape it horizontally over your bed. Either way, it should add texture and comfort to your bedding. Here, if your bedding is already busy, you can keep it neutral, or accessorize it with something patterned and fancy.
Now that you know how to layer your bedding like a designer, you can show off your bedroom and be confident you have the best bedding on the block! Happy decorating!
